Palestinian Ambassador Asks the European Union to Be Consistent With Its Principles

The EU fights fascism in Europe but celebrates it in Israel, Ambassador Wahed pointed out.
Husni Abdel Wahed, the Palestinian ambassador to Spain, asked the European Union (EU) to commit “to its own values and principles” and apply them in Gaza, where Europe “has to be held accountable.”

The ambassador participated in a discussion accompanied by the Spanish Minister of Social Rights, Pablo Bustinduy. The EU fights fascism in Europe but celebrates it in Israel, Wahed pointed out, accusing Europeans of applying “selective humanism.”
The solution to the conflict in Gaza lies in “implementing what so many preach and consider the panacea,” which are universal human rights, Wahed stated, noting that Europeans have a selective vision of these rights.
“Don’t say they are universal rights. Say they are rights for blue-eyed white people,” the Palestinian ambassador said, lamenting that not much can be expected from the European Union.
This is because Ursula Von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, “gave Israel a blank check” to perpetrate a genocide. The situation will not improve in the short term as Hungary assumes the EU presidency this month.
For his part, Pablo Bustinduy noted that Spain is giving substance to the recognition of the Palestinian State with actions such as joining the demand for genocide before the International Court of Justice. He pointed out that “words matter” and reiterated that what is happening in Palestine “is a genocide.”
Also participating in the dialogue were the South African ambassador, Sankie Mthembi-Mahanyele, who thanked Spain for joining her government’s genocide claim, and the director of the Spanish Committee of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Raquel Marti.
Regarding short-term prospects in Gaza, Marti warned that UNRWA will be “forced to close” in August if more contributions do not arrive. She also asked to “stop the criminalization” of UNRWA and for Israel to respect its premises and allow access to all humanitarian aid in Gaza.
Since the Zionist state began its offensive against Gaza on October 7, 2023, Israeli occupation forces have killed 37,900 Palestinians and injured 87,060 people.
